The Silent Scream of a Young Black Woman

Anora was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario — territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Anishnabeg, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat — a second-generation Trinidadian-Canadian. Her lifelong passion for social justice grew as she recognized societal inequalities. Witnessing the death of George Floyd and the reality of police brutality further fueled her commitment to dismantling oppressive systems. Currently a third-year social work student interning at WomenatthecentrE, she advocates against racism, gender-based violence, and human trafficking.

Aba Owusu-Biney, known as 'The Psalmist,' is a poet and emerging spoken-word artist. Through this persona, she reflects on various facets of her identity — her experiences, emotions and thoughts — interwoven with her Christian faith. Aba began writing poetry as a form of therapy, a way to express herself as a Black African woman. Over time, this therapeutic outlet has evolved into a deeper passion, with Aba continuously honing her craft and growing as a creative.
